The Raffle

This poem pays tribute to an annual event which is part of Words And Music  history and only takes place at the first meeting of the year. I refer of course to our annual New Year’s Raffle which has been organised for many years by our founding mother Pamela Duncan. I have given it the title The Raffle I hope you enjoy the read.

This picture shows Our Founding Mother conducts the draw for the 2018 Words And Music raffle abley assisted by poet and writer Peter Clive who was making his debut at the event last night.

The Raffle.
It’s part of our tradition

I can’t remember when it started

but I do know who started it

our founding mother Pamela came up with the idea

to get rid of Christmas presents

that were surplus to requirements

well what’s unwanted by you

may be desired by someone else

DVD’s, books, jumpers, tops,  beauty sets,

and the obligatory mince pies,  chocolates, and alcohol

were on offer last night

or have been in previous years

depending on when your number came up

at least this time with so many donations

no-one was unlucky and left empty handed

you have to understand that for seasoned veterans among us

this wasn’t always the case

the look on Andy’s face when he left with three prizes was priceless

compensation for all those years of winning nothing but sympathy

there are in jokes in these lines

only the long standing regulars will get

though last night a few more were inducted in to the tradition

which was, is, and ever shall be the words and music raffle

where your entry fee is paid

by a poem, song or story.

What I Got For Christmas Proves That I’ve Been One Of The Good Girls

Hey Readers

As everyone is always curious about what our friends got for Christmas I thought I share what I got on the blog.

As you will see in this collection of photographs Santa has been good to me and I have been a very lucky lady with all the presents I received.

Picture (1) Shows the presents I got from my friend Victoria who spoilt me far more than I deserved with gorgeous nail polish, a good quality face cream , and a stunningly beautiful Celtic broach.

image

Picture (2) Shows some of the River Island haul I got from the money Janette gave me. As you can see, I got a lovely pink long sleeved top and a two pack of black tights. Well black does tend to go with any colour so it works well with any outfit.

image

Picture (3) Demonstrates the fact that I can be a savvy shopper as I also bought the same top in white and I think you can just about see it in this shot.

image

Picture (4) Shows the rest of my River Island haul which I wore to the Watch Night Service to welcome in Christmas morning and I think you’ll agree it looks reasonably festive. Well as my friend Fiona says red is the Christmas colour and I like the idea of teaming it up with a black skirt and black sparkly tights to complete the festive look.

Picture (5) For my last picture in this post I have to thank my flatmate’s mum for her generosity as she gave me a Christmas bag with woman’s stuff and a box of roses chocolates which always go down well in our house.

You know, all things considered I think Santa was very good to me this year, but so he should be. Because I’ve heard it said, he knows if you’ve been bad or good so I think by his generosity to me and by what I got for Christmas Santa has proved beyond doubt that I’ve been one of the good girls.

Chocolates Perfume And Playing For Laughs Bring Smiles On Christmas Morning But A The Gift Of A Debt Free Future Is The Perfect Christmas Present

Hey Readers I don’t know about you but I have to say I’m very pleased with my presents this year. Not only did I get my usual  chocolate’s ,  body sprays, and girly stuff to make both my body and  bath time  smell sweeter. I also got candles and a bamboo candle holder to place them in, the complete DVD box set of Only Fools And Horses which is my opinion the best British comedy series ever made, A box of my favourite chocolates and money to buy myself to a gift set of my favourite perfume and body wash and money to spend at the sales.  I have no doubt whatsoever that some of my favourite girly brands will reap the harvest of what I have to say was an unexpected Christmas bonus.

So how did I do so well this year when I am after all a lady of leisure. Well it’s simple and it’s all down to the generosity of my flatmate Janette who got a nice wee early present from Santa in the form of some extra and unexpected cash from a payment protection insurance windfall. Though it may not have been enough to pay off the mortgage it was more than enough to settle a number bod outstanding debts and when she gave me enough money to pay off my credit card in full I was more than delighted to accept it.  Well I am a great believer in the old saying that you should never look a gift horse in the mouth.

Being far more in line with economic thinking of John Swinney who actually is prudent with money rather than Gordon Brown who only claimed he was. The extra I was given as a wee top up to my bank balance will be used wisely and any new outfits I buy will be purchased at the sales from day wear like that black pencil skirt I have my eye on to lingerie, tights, and party dresses  I will hunt for them on the sale rails of the high streets rather than pay full price in the designer boutiques. Well why buy two or three items when you can purchase a new wardrobe for the same price? I mean it just doesn’t add up.

No doubt some of you will be wondering if I take this sensible approach to my food shopping or my cosmetics and the answer is that I do. This may explain why Smith and Marshall mansions had its first full  Christmas fridge and  larder and for a significant number of years  Witness these pictures of full larders as what can’t speak can’t lie and yes I am proud of the fact that I managed all this on a budget that wouldn’t break the bank

Picture 1 Basic Meals If you look closely you will see a lot of Morrison’s own brands and trust me they are every bit as a tasty as the better known producers.

Picture 2 Treats And Desserts  No Christmas is ever complete without some festive treats and desserts. I have to admit I love mince pies which are in my opinion the ultimate festive snack with a cup of coffee or other refreshment to wash it down. When it comes to New Year no Scottish household can ever be without shortbread even if it is the only time of year we actually buy it. Well New Year and St Andrew’s Night.  I have to say l love shortbread and unlike so many I don’t need to wait for a day of culture significance to temp my taste buds round it.

So food and drink catered for, it is time to show off my presents. Amongst this year’s goodies are this little collection

Picture 3  A Little Bit Girly

image

This collection shows three of my favourite things  Yes I promise I won’t break in to the song in the ALDI advert, but what woman doesn’t like a new make up bag, a ghost sweetheart beauty set with perfume and body wash, and of course a little bit of chocolate temptation with some Thornton’s Turkish Delight. I think it’s safe to say I liked these gifts.

Finally Picture 4 shows that laughter really is the best medicine and what could be better to tickle the funny bone than the complete  DVD box set collection of Only Fools And Horses

This to me is one of the best if not the best situation  comedy ever written. It had everything humour, with the loveable rogue that is Del Boy and his hapless if slightly more moral younger brother Rodney and a brilliant cast of highly believable characters from second hand car salesmen to village idiots who were all in their own way likable and with whom we all easily identify. Of course eventually both Del Boy and Rodney marry and I’ve never admitted this before but I wouldn’t have minded playing the part of Rodney’s wife  Cassandra. Well likable though he was I don’t think I could have married someone like Del Boy he was too much a specialist in the bullshit department it would have been like marrying a member of the Labour Party and there are some things which even I would say no to.  Seriously though I was really chuffed to get this present and for that matter all the others I was l
lucky to get and to all who have given me a present, a card or a word of encouragement or kindness I hope you had a lovely Christmas and that 2016 brings you all you wish for yourselves and those you hold close to your heart.  As for me, I start 2016 in the best financial health I’ve ever been in and that as far as I’m concerned is the best Christmas present of all.

Family Faith And Friendship And A Baby Born In Baillieston There Was No Room At The Inn But The Village Was Filled With Good Cheer

Hey everyone It’s been a lovely Christmas this year spent mainly in the company of three families The first is my the family of my flatmate Janette and the and the second is the family that is the community of believers that is the parish of Baillieston St Andrew’s and the third is the family who are the core group within my virtual village of facebook and twitter.

In keeping with my own personal tradition I was up as soon as I opened my eyes on the day itself. There has always been about Christmas for me and it’s something I try to hold on to even now. It’s like a day of kindness and hope based on family faith and friendship where we care for those around us rather than show selfish individualism and greed we are relentlessly encouraged to pursue for the rest of the year.

Anyway, mindful of the fact that Janette and I were going to her family for Christmas I was up early to get ready. Well a woman can’t just wave a magic wand and hope for the best you know. Believe me that idea is fantasy though there isn’t a girl on earth who doesn’t wish it did.

Once I had achieved this feet and was dressed and made up to my satisfaction I reflected on the fact that Christmas Eve had saw me attend two services rather than one and both were held at my local parish. It was great to see that despite the horrendous pressures only Christmas Eve can bring like last minute shopping, having what seems like a million pressies to wrap and on this occasion gale force winds both services were I have to say reasonably well attended.

The services may have contrasted in style, delivery and content perhaps because one was an early carol service and the other the more traditional watch night variety and they were delivered by two very different ministers but the underlying message was still the same. Namely that we are celebrating the reason for season and that is birth of the babe in a manger.

I have to say I enjoyed them both for very different reasons. The first one which I was taken by our regular minister Malcolm Cuthbertson brought a contemporary twist to the Christmas story and asked us to imagine that Jesus was to be born not in Bethlehem but in Baillieston to Jamie and Jennifer not Mary and Joseph. Whilst I will readily admit that this took a leap of faith I and all others who attended will admit it was brilliant way to bring the story to life and make it relevant for our times. As Malcolm said quite rightly in my opinion, all too often the Christmas story is dismissed by those people who say it happened a long time ago in a far away land and is not relevant to our modern world of Scotland at the Christmas of 2013. Therefore by making relevant to the community in which he ministers his No Room at the Rhinsdale or Log Cabin contained a powerful message and helped us to emphasise with the Wise Men, Shepard’s and onlookers who went to visit the new born baby Jesus in that little town of Bethlehem.

The watch night service which was taken by one of Malcolm’s assistant ministers Howard was delivered in a far more traditional manner. I have to admit I love watch night service as it takes us through the last stages of Christmas Eve and in to Christmas morning. It was also good to see my friend Fiona who has attended every watch night service I’ve ever attended at Baillieston St Andrew’s and it was good to catch up with her latest news.

As I made my way back to the flat I found a very sleepy Janette snuggled up on the chair. This meant I could take a wee wander round my virtual villages and make a start on delivering my Christmas messages to certain VIP’s who are always at the top of my Christmas list before going to my bed to sleep and dream of Santa and what he might bring me. The fact that I managed to perform both feets in a world of sin capitalism and relentless marketing whilst remembering the reason for the season is I believe a real achievement an example of what I call real quality multi-tasking.

As I said earlier I was up with the birdies on Christmas morning. It’s just the way I am and always will be. It really is the best of the year providing you spend it with good company and I certainly did. Well I went to visit Janette’s family and I always enjoy their company. They are a good crowd, especially her young brother Ed to whom she has always been close. On the subject of Ed he has recently announced that he will be getting married to his partner Louise in March, so that’s a wedding to go to next year and I have to say I think it will be one to remember. Well how many couples do you know who get married then go to the dogs for a reception? Not many I’ll bet but look out Shawfield here we come. Who knows it might be the first time I ever come back from a wedding with more money than I had when I went there.

Talking of dogs, I now believe I have met the most hyper active in the history of the world as Ed brought Louise’s dog over to pay us a Christmas visit. Honestly I have seen some crazy animals, but this one
a staffordshire bull terrier called Boston just can’t seem to sit still. This meant Janette’s mum evacuating the living room for what she calls the chill out room with her new ‘companion’ Billy. This was the first time Janette and I had met Billy and I have to say he seems like a really genuine guy.

Meanwhile as the presents were unwrapped I found that I had done rather well. I got perfume, body sets, tights, and loads and loads of chocolates. What more could a girl want? I mean seriously I did well and it is obvious at it is to me that someone had been Santa’s case this year.

I don’t know how it happened but there was no telly on in Marshall Mansions and but this was house filled was with Christmas songs thanks to Janette’s very musical mother. On the plus side, this meant no queen’s speech but the minus it did mean a wee bit too much Karaoke than is suitable on such an occasion but it allow me to get on with my Christmas messages be they by facebook text or tweet.

Eventually when the singing stopped it was time sit down to a dinner prepared by Louise aka Ed’s future intended. Now I have this was seriously brilliant and I was so stuffed I honestly didn’t want to move. This has to be the best Christmas dinner I have ever had and the lentil soup was to die for. Now considering I was brought up on massive three course meals during the festive season I don’t give out complements lightly so when I give a meal a five star review then it must be seriously tasty and deserving of the praise and believe it certainly was.

Honestly I’ve never seen so much on a plate it was enough to feed the 5 million let alone the 5 thousand. However with the CD player blaring out the festive times I have to point out that the biggest feast I have ever seen was brought to the table to the strains of Do They Know It’s Christmas which was released in 1984 to raise money to help the victims of the Ethiopian and wider Sub Saharan famine who were dying in their millions from poverty. I must admit the irony of this did not escape me.

After the meal myself and Janette had a chat with Louise and Ed before Janette decided to get Ed to drive us back to Baillieston and though I regretted this at the time it was probably just as well we did as five minutes after arriving at Smith and Marshall Mansions Janette had fallen asleep on the chair. This I thought, was a result as it meant at least in theory that I could win the battle of the box.

My optimism however turned out to be cruelly misplaced as she woke up just in time to see the soaps and to be perfectly honest I could really have without Christmas visits to the dales or the cobbles but Coronation Street and Emmerdale are must sees for Janette though I’ve never understood the reason why. However managed to see the Christmas edition of strictly so I suppose I did get some kind of result.

As for the rest of the night well that and most of boxing day were taken up by contacting my friends in my virtual village as a refuge from Janette having hogged the remote control. It seems that everyone has done well and though there was no room at the inn the village was full of good cheer. So, job done Santa can now rest and begin his 48 week annual holiday. As for me I think I’ll need to get tucked in to some more from my selection box well it’s just that time of the year. As for the diet, well that can wait till January.
