I May Not Be A Person Of Interest But I Do Have An Interesting Life

As a blogger of over five years I would like to say there are few if any issues which have caused me concern since starting tartan tights in March 2012 .

I have put a lot of effort in to what I hope is now a site worth reading and strive to create quality content on a number of diverse topics in which I could be said to have an interest. This has not been an easy journey but it has in the main been an enjoyable and rewarding one . However at this stage of my blogging history I am perhaps for the first time experiencing a very slight unease and if you’ll allow me the privilege I’ll explain the reason why

It started at the beginning of this month when I suddenly noticed a spike in my stats. Now normally this would be a good thing which would leave me feeling pretty positive but to me at least it was a problem, you see though the views were substantially up the only real increase was in my home page. When added to the fact that this increase was coming not from the UK (my site doesn’t give separate figures for Scotland) but from the United States I was shall we say ever so slighty puzzled .

As a political activist I worried that since I hold views which would lead to the alt right calling me a snowflake that I may have become a person of interest but even for a Celtic fan that may be taking paranoia to a whole new level. I mean I know I have been a vocal critic of President Trump and his friends in the UK Conservative Party but person of interest surely not.

After putting my paranoia to bed I thought about other potential reasons for this sudden spike in my stats, and the only reason I can possibly think of is that unlike my genuine American readership they don’t actually know what my blog is about and perhaps because of the name they believe it to be focused on one of the following areas.

(1) Tartan

(2) Tights

(3) Both

When they discover it is about neither the tartans of the clans of Scotland or the latest fashion hoisery I can only begin to imagine the horror in their faces, no doubt this will be made even worse when they realise that the blogger concerned is a spoken word poet who is also a transsexual woman and an ardent supporter of both Scottish independence and environmental issues such as climate change. Yes I am really what some would a liberal minded progressive which in Scotland we call normal. I guess this is why most of them don’t make it past the home page. To me the fact they don’t read my posts is their loss rather than mine and message to them is clear if you don’t want to read my content then don’t re-visit my site in the hope it will change,  because it wont and neither will I. Anyway as you should know the definition of insanity is repeating the same action and hoping for a different result.

So having made all the points I wanted to make,  I will conclude by saying this is my blog. It is my space on the information super highway that is the internet . It a place where I’ll share my thoughts in my way and I’ll try to produce the kind of content I know my regular readers enjoy reading and after five and a half years of tartan tights I think I know what that might be. Why do I say this you may ask, well I’ll tell you why and it all comes down this simple fact, I may not be a person of interest, but I do have an interesting life.

Till next time

Eclipsed

As many of you will know this is National Poetry Day and this year the theme for the event is freedom. Like all the themes chosen to celebrate this day it can be interpreted in any number of ways but inspite of mywell documented support for both the Scottish National Party and the cause of independence , if you have come here looking for a braveheart claymore wielding poem in support of my party or cause your going to very disappointed.  I’ve written plenty of those poems in the past and will do so again when the occasion demands. This however, is neither the time nor the place for it. Instead i have chosen to look at the top in a more petsonal capacity by addressing those hard won freedoms that should be the hallmark of any civilised society and the danger to them from the Conservative goverment and The Great Repeal Bill which would give UK Prime Minister Theresa May the powers of a medievil monarch. This is the most dangerous piece of legislation brought before any parliament since the German parliament passed the Enabling Act in 1933 which paved the way for Hitler’s reign of terror. I’ve given it the title Eclipsed as i genuinely fear for our rights if this passes into law. I hope you enjoy the read

Eclipsed
Freedom

For this Glasgweigan

means being able to assemble

with my friends at a place of my choice

raise my voice in demonstrations

or poetry nights

fight for the rights of others

as well as myself

I’ve never been the selfish type

some kinds of freedoms are greatly overhyped

like that to offend others

in the name of free speech

freedom means having within my reach

the chance to make the most of my skills and abilities

walk the streets with dignity

unafraid to be who i am

whilst respecting others

even when we may disagree on certain issues

it is not a woolly concept

supported only by guardian reading

bleeding heart liberals

and must be availble to all citizens

not just those who can afford

to send their children to the right schools

it is imposing only rules considered reasonable and necessary

for society to function properly

but in all honesty

not everyone is as free

as should be the case in a civilised country

I recognise freedom can have an ugly side

if allowed to go unchecked

to me it’s all about respect

we can’t afford to neglect our hard won rights

or the sun will go down on them

and as we sleep through the darkest hour of night

we will wake up to find them eclipsed

Frontline

As I’m sure most of you know activism whether cultural, social, or political has always played a big part in my life. So when it was selected to be the topic for this month’s Extra Second I was naturally delighted to volunteer my services to perform at the event and have written this poem entitled Frontline especially for the occasion. I hope you enjoy the read .

Frontline
I attend demonstratations

for a variety of causes and campaigns

come rain or shine you will find me

on the frontline

supporting those who need it

on a range of issues

local, national, or international,

sometimes the apathetic call me irrational

tell me I can’t   change the world

or the society of the nation I live in

but Scotland and Britain need people like me

people who want to make changes

for the better

not surrender to selfishness and greed

I want to help those in greatest need

give them a hand up not a hand out

and certainly not the kind the Tories talk about

they deserve rights and equality

not a world where the only way is poverty

we are supposed to be a  wealthy nation

not a nation for the wealthy

the mind thyself culture

is not just unhealthy

it’s wrong and that’s why I’m trying as hard as I can to change it

we can’t allow those with gold plated gates

to lock the rest of us out

and that’s why it’s important to voice opinions

on what happens outside your borders

there can be no limits to justice

we have a duty to support the oppressed wherever they are

designer goods and fast cars

have never been my style

as my gran always told me

you can’t take them with you when you go

and believe me I know the truth of that story

that’s why I oppose Tory policies

you don’t solve problems by creating inequality

foodbanks  are not the solution to poverty

and  I cringe at Westminster’s attitude

at the wealthy selling arms to corrupt government’s abroad

meanwhile millions of citizens are ignored

as doors of opportunity to change

are slammed shut in their faces

If this is the best we can do it’s outrageous

especially when  cutting costs means that slowly

the NHS  bleeds to  death

for lack of funding

this kind of attitude is disgusting

and it’s why you’ll see me on the front line

protesting at the wrongs of the world

and doing whatever I can

to change them for the better

The Ultimate Selfservative And Her Slowly Slipping Halo.

If you asked me who was without doubt the most arrogant, deluded , self serving politician in Scotland. My answer would not be our First Minister Nicola Sturgeon. Nor would it be her predecessor predecessor and the man unionists love to hate Alex Salmond.  Labour leader Kezia Dugdale is another who will be glad to know she failed to win this most unwanted title as did the Liberal Democrats Scottish leader Willie Rennie or the Tory Party’s Secretary for Scotland in a state and before you ask I did get that job description the right way round especially when you consider the occupant of it is one David Mundell. If you had given me the last answer however, you would be getting a lot  closer as to who I believe holds this title. You see I believe the most arrogant and deluded politician in Scotland is the leader of the Scottish Conservative group at Holyrood Ruth Davidson.

Yes I have surprised you haven’t I ? Well not if your a regular reader of this blog I haven’t.  You I have never believed that  Ruth is anywhere near as talented as she likes to think , unless you measure talent by  the size of your ego rather than your intellect or how many sycophantic friends you have in the UK Press And Media.

Ever since the beginning of the indeprndence referendum campaign there has been a concerted effort by those sympathetic to the unionist view to remould and detoxify the previously toxic Tory brand in Scotland and slowly but surely we saw the Tories who many of us regardless of our position on the constitutional position thought were on the edge not only of mainstream political thought but also of normality brought back in to our political discourse and in Ruth Davidson the British establishment created the toy that no-one even thought possible the cuddly Tory and some people began to take that toy on trial.

During the referendum Davidson won a reputation as a feisty debater who wasn’t afraid to make she believed was a positive case for the UK and Scotland’s place in the union.  However, it was in the aftermath of the referendum that Opperation Ruth really got under way as she positioned herself as the self styled saviour of the union. The fact that Davidson was able to achieve this was due in no small part to the collapse of the Labour Party  due to their vote being more pro independence than the  leadership of the Scottish party ever believed possible. This in Ruth’s world that Labour and the Liberal Democrats would at some time have to be open to greater powers for the Scottish Parliament or even embrace independence from the UK and to her this was completely unacceptable and she was going to tell us this and make sure we got the message

Helped at every opportunity by her friends in the press Davidson was given a very easy ride and was left to attack the Scottish Government at every available chance. It was becoming more obvious by the day that  the cuddly conservative had now become the cuddly unionist and was allowed to campaign in every recent election be Council, Scottish , and Westminster on only one issue namely her opposition to what she described as a second divisive independence referendum.

The fact that both the Labour Party and Liberal Democrats also ran on this campaign was absolutely shocking but proof if any were needed that it was Davidson who had framed the unionist debate in post referendum Scotland. As someone who got politically active as a twenty something during the Thatcher Years I have to admit it caused me very real and genuine concern that nobody seemed to mention the fact she was a Tory least of all Davidson herself . Indeed in the 2016 Scottish Parliamentary Elections one could have been forgiven for thinking that the Scottish Conservative And Unionist Party had been renamed the Ruth Davidson Party so absent were the words Conservative, or Tory from her campaign literature.

With her unexpected success in replacing The Labour Party as the main opposition party at Holyrood Davidson began to display the first signs of the arrogance which will eventually destroy her by claiming that she was now leader of the official opposition to the SNP government of Nicola Sturgeon despite the fact there is no such title for the opposition in Holyrood.

As if this wasn’t enough she then boasted despite her party being comprehensively destroyed in the constituency vote by the SNP that she was the slayer of nationalists when campaigning for the UK to remain in the European Union.   In any other country in the world this would have been hailed as a sign of politician losing their mind but in unionist Scotland, it was hailed as a sign of a stateswoman and it was no surprise that she won the Herald Politician Of The Year award a decision I thought was absolutely laughable.

Since then the press and media have continued talk up Ruth Davidson as the voice of mainstream political unionism in Scotland and her party’s recent electoral success in gaining 13 seats at the UK General Election will no doubt be used as further evidence of that  claim. This is all very well but there are I think a couple of fatal flaws in this argument. The first came at the end of March during the debate in the Scottish Parliament on whether or not to hold a second independence referendum when Ruth showed her temper by attempting to tell First Minister Nicola Sturgeon to  sit down. This was bullying pure and simple and it far from being a stateswoman Davidson was no more than a petulant  child in a job which demands more talents than she has in  her locker.

The second flaw was shown during the live TV election debates when the mask of the cuddly unionist began to slip as she was grilled on  the controversial rape clause legislation and again her temper began to show a very ugly side to her personality.

It was however in a one to one interview that the bold Ruth showed how deluded she was when she claimed that the SNP did not win last year’s Scottish Elections. This and her recent posting of a picture of a supermodel on the Twitter social networking  site  show a politician who is slowly but steadily embarking on a journey to political decline and her hubris will be the death of a political career which was built on a house of sand. The halo of the ultimate selfservative has slowly started to slip and it  is only a matter of time before it completes it’s downward journey and  I look forward to the inevitable crash.

Democracy Matters

On day 20 of NaPoWriMo I tacke the media made myth that Scotland’s voters and getting tired of voting and may be have a bit of voter fatigue. This is exactly how Ruth Davidson and Kezia Dugdale  want you to feel , it represents by far their best chance of even limited electoral success as they know that a politically motivated Scotland is not in their intersts These people who are no  more than branch office managers for their respective Westminster parties are really keen for Scotland to be quiet and go back to sleep so they can do what they like and no-one will notice or even care. It is therefore fair to say that apathy is one of the most important weapons they happen to have in their quest to keep Scotland subordinate and that’s why I’ve tilted this poem Democracy Matters. I hope you enjoy the read.
Democracy Matters.

The drip feeding has started on TV and in the press

as the establishment suggest

the voters of Scotland are fed up with voting

 you’ve  got to be  joking

I never tire of defending my hard won rights and liberties

I’ll campaign hard but I’ll do it with dignity

you see I’ve been involved in too many fights

for too many causes

to ever even think of giving up on democracy

so when I hear people say

I don’t do politics

I say a prayer for the apathetic

and hope they remember their words

when someone they don’t like gets elected

and their rights are infringed

I’ve had enough of this cringing

it really is time for them to stop their whinging

or shut up and never raise their voice in anger  again

as for who wins the race to number 10

God forbid  the Tories will be re-elected

though I think they will

I like some Labour policies

but voting for them would be

too bitter a pill to swallow

their still toxic to me

I voted yes to independence

and will do so again

I’m scunnered with Westminster

and their heartless austerity policies

I want to live in a country where democracy  matters
where our rights and liberties are respected

and no-one needs to live in fear

because of who they are

or what  they are perceived to be

stereotypes don’t do it for me

my politics will  never be

about giving people different coloured triangles

this is not 1933

I wouldn’t be here if it  was

a trans woman with physical impairments

who supports the Trade Union movement

I’d have been a cert for the final solution

my only saving grace would have been

having so many labels

the Nazi’s wouldn’t have known

where to place me or what box to tick

though no doubt they would have got me on something

trust me I’m not bluffing

this country is facing a very stark choice

if we don’t use our vote

The Tories will claim we’ve made our choice

more families will be forced in to poverty

more disabled people will die

but the top one percent will thrive

and the media will spin it

 that we’re doing well

they’ll talk of prosperity and dig out a few selective examples

as proof of their point

giving no further thought to consequences of their actions

or the trail of devastation they leave in their wake

to be apathetic to this heartless government

is a risk I’m not willing to take

If you say we’re voting too often

that’s your call

but if you fall for this trap

 don’t say you weren’t warned

when your nightmares become reality

and  one by one your rights die

at the dawn of a true blue Tory kingdom

united in your name

by your apathy and your ignorance

Scroungers (A Tabloid  Tory Has An Ephiney)

On day 19 of NaPoWriMo My poem takes a satirical look at  press and media stereotypes. These stereotypes  are all too often used by the establishment to label and demonise those groups society consideres different like Immigrants and Disabled People and have a really negative impact if we don’t counter act them .I have given my poem the title Scroungers, I hope you enjoy the read.

Scroungers

I hate scroungers

I really do

coming over here to live off

our resources

taking things from the likes of me and you

they get all the best housing

it’s true I read it in the Daily Mail

and that’s a paper I trust

I’m glad we’re leaving Europe

and putting Britain first

it will stop all those Poles

taking our jobs

we need to make Britain great

believe in the United Kingdom

well Britain’s got talent

and the X-factor is the envy of the world

it really it is

I think Simon Cowell should be Prime Minister

he’d soon put a stop to all these immigrants

flooding our country

with all those languages and traditions

can they not understand this is Britain

we don’t want this kind of nonsense

and as for Scotland I don’t want independence

I don’t support separation

I get all the political education I need

from the Daily Express

that’s why I hate Nicola Sturgeon

I mean anyone who wears  a red dress that often

has to be a communist

and I hate communists I really do

I’m all for the union

three cheers for the red white and blue

I know I’m poor and all the royals and lords are stinking rich

so what life’s a bitch

but these people need the extra money

what do you mean I’m a Tory

I’ve voted Labour all of my days

but I think Theresa May is better to lead the  country

she knows how to put people in their place

she’s told them in Europe

we’re leaving and that’s the way it is

we’re going through the trap door

and we’re going to get rid of all the European laws

We’ll ban the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus

but poverty will be still be allowed

and disabled people will have their benefits cut

for being scroungers

there  a drain on our resources

and a burden on the state

what have they ever done to make Britain great ?

nothing,

it’s not shocking
who the hell is Stephen Hawking ?

was he in the paralympic team

god save our gracious Queen

what do you mean she costs too much ?

that’s not true or I would have read in the Sun

or saw it on the BBC News

I know everything I need to know

and that’s not a lot

I’m British not a Scot

and I might vote Tory

I believe in a land of hope and glory

even if it kills me and it might

I know I’m right to hate scroungers

what’s that it’s a pity I don’t know who the real scroungers are

seriously, the bankers are worse than the immigrants ?

The United Kingdom is run by and for the privileged

and they don’t give a damn about me

well …

maybe being British isn’t so great after all

Lessons

On day 3 of NaPoWriMo it is time for a political poem and it may not come as too much of a shock that the  topic of choice is independence. What may however be a bit of a surprise is that the tone of the poem comes as a warning to yes supporters to learn the lessons of history to avoid repeating the mistakes and indeed disappointments of 2014. In this poem I urge our supporters to offer the hand of friendship to those voters who voted no in 2014 and set about winning them over to Yes and winning a better Scotland because of it. I have given it the title  Lessons I hope you enjoy the read
Lessons
If Scotland is ever to see the day

when we become an independent self governing nation

we must learn the lessons of the last campaign

we cannot afford to win the day

and lose the future

economics may be not my seducer

but it is effective for many

and that penny needs to drop

we have to recognise its power

or the flower of Scotland will never truly bloom

our country will not be won

by slogans, clipboards, and demonstrations

though they will play a part

we must use the head and speak from the heart

be inclusive of all communities

and not be afraid of tackling deeply held prejudices

amongst our own supporters

as to why we think the way we do

this will be a challenge

but it has to be faced

we can’t simply wish it away

and hope our opponents are magically cured

of the loyalties which bind them to  union

this is why we never won last time

we need to engage and say clearly and with honestly

we can offer no guarantees

but neither can our opponents

and we need to call them out

when they claim otherwise

there are no such thing as certainties

to pretend that the present is set in stone

is not the solution

we were told we would never leave

the European Union

yet Brexit and the isolation it will bring

will turn us more selfish and right wing

as gradually the UK becomes ever more insular

with xenophobia masked as the new patriotism

this is a vision I do not share

I despair that our civic Scotland will be under threat

and every word we say will be scrutinised

the smears and lies have already started

winning the future is not a job for the faint hearted

we have to offer the hand of friendship

to those who voted no in 2014

not accuse them of killing our dreams

in moments of anger and frustration

it is too easy to throw about words like independence and nation

without explaining why we would better than Westminster

at running our own affairs

I want to live in a country that cares

for our most vulnerable citizens

not a United Kingdom based on wealth patronage and privilege

that’s why my identity is Scottish not British

I don’t want to live a land which still fantasises

about a past when they called other countries colonies

whilst keeping their own people poor in the name of empire

telling them they should be proud

they couldn’t feed their families

I don’t want to live in a country

where people are devalued due to race , religion , gender or sexuality

where diversity is demonised

and difference is viewed with fear

to me  these kind of attitudes

are barriers to the progressive society

I’ve always believed in

I know there will be some in both the SNP and yes

who will be uncomfortable with me

because of the way I dress

and the fact I am a woman with a trans past

but I’m prepared to take the chance

that our very different versions of what independence should mean

will be keenly contested in elections in which Scotland’s voters matter

as for now I’ll accept them as allies

in defeating the spin and patter

coming from unionists with agendas

the way the Tories have been behaving

they might as well start singing no surrender or Rule Britannia

or giving pensioners free photographs of Margaret Thatcher

rather than trying to pretend

they give a damn about our country

we need to debate them on the issues

we need to win ugly

by convincing those voters who are willing to listen

that Britain belongs in the past

though I admit it  may have been good for some

 this battle needs won

not for Auld Lang Syne

nor memories of old

we’ve got to be bold for the future generations

those growing up

and others still to see the day

it is their future that’s at risk

we can , we must, we will do better than this

when we learn our lessons

the future will be ours.
