Strawberries In Glasgow Green On A Good Friday Afternoon

Hey everyone. Tomorrow I will have the privilege of performing and co-hosting the Love Words event at the Gallery Of Modern Art. With this very much on my mind I have decided to share my poetic tribute to one of the first poets to inspire my interest in the art and the man whose poem In The Snack Bar remains one of my all time favourite poems. My poem for Edwin Morgan combines three of his titles in one of mine it’s called Strawberries In Glasgow Green On A Good Friday Afternoon. I hope you enjoy the read.

Strawberries In Glasgow Green On A Good Friday Afternoon.

Sitting in Glasgow Green
savouring the sweetness of strawberries
on a Good Friday afternoon
you hear tunes which say
the marching season is not far away
old prejudices fuel fears
fan the flames of ignorance
fracturing communities
dividing neighbours
who though friends
will sit at opposite ends
in the snack bar
but that’s for another day
meanwhile you stay
sitting in the green
refusing to allow your feast
to taste of bitterness
