Swarm

As we draw ever closer to Christmas I’ve written this poem in support of those that the right wing press love to demonise as those bloody foreigners who if you were to believe these billionaire tax evaders are the source of all the problems in the United Kingdom.  Speaking as someone who supported Scotland leaving this moribund superstate and for that matter still does I wrote this to highlight these obscene beliefs  held by many of those who claimed we were better together and though mainly on the Conservative right they are not exclusively so.  I’ve given it the title Swarm a word so beloved by those on the ultra British right to describe those of different ethnic or cultural origin. I hope you enjoy what I think you’ll a thought provoking read.

Swarm

Our British existance is under attack

let’s wrap ourselves in a union jack

it’s time to take our country back

we have to start swotting this swarm

I can’t speak Polish and I don’t do Syrian

I want the great put back into Great Britain

I couldn’t give a damn about Palestinians

I just want rid of this swarm

Trust me my friend it’s an alien invasion

but a little blue passport will be your salvation

it will give us inspiration

on how to get rid of this swarm

They come over here to milk the system

because of our wonderful United Kingdom

If all of them left we wouldn’t miss them

we’d be well rid of the swarm

They can’t speak the language

we gave to our colonies

there a threat to our empire and our democracy

yet the Jocks all say we’ll die in poverty

Maybe they are part of the swarm

I read this bile every day in the press

It’s part of the reason I voted yes

I know global citizens who’ve achieved great success

since making a home among us

So as I say this I do it with pride

In Scotland all have a place to bide

unlike the Brits we’re on your side

and proud to be part of the swarm.

As Lands Lie Bleeding

On Remembrance Day I write a poem which is based on the concerns of a 94 year old veteran who served in the Second World War. This former soldier believes that we are now standing at the brink of a third world war and potential global catastrophe due to what he calls the greed and self interest of a group of sociopathetic leaders who have no compassion or empathy for those they lead or for the greater human race as they seek only power no matter the cost to the rest of us. I hope I have done justice to the words of Harry Leslie Smith in this poem which I’ve titled As Lands Lie Bleeding. I hope you enjoy the read.

As Lands Lie Bleeding

I can’t stand by and watch the world explode

these are not my words

but those of a former soldier

in the winter of his years

who genuinely fears for our human race

this is a man who has faced unspeakable horrors

the likes of which we hoped we would never see again

like hearing whilst stationed in Germany

that atomatic bombs had been dropped on japanese cities

and turned the souls of inhabitants

in to what he describes as chalk marked stenciled drawings on pavements

in the fragile peace of a cold war world

we had believed those days were behind us

yet now we stand at a crossroads

not seen since the 1930’s and rise of Nazi Germany

as once more the conservative right

squares  up for a fight without realising the consequences

these people have a glorified sense of self

but no sense of other nor compassion for their plight

without a moral compass they play games with our lives

in contrast to those who rebuilt a shattered continent

at the end of the last global conflict

who in this country brought us

The NHS and welfare state

but now the politics of fear and hate are on the rise again

as the disadvantaged look for scapegoats

to blame for their decline

shortage of housing and rising crime statistics

blame it on the forigners not the British

say those who preach exclusion

as if by doing so we magically solve all problems

I support an independent Scotland

but I recognise that independence alone would not solve our problems overnight

however in the dreamworld of the British Conservative right

they are prepared to make no such admissions about their United Kingdom

and by perpuating their delusions

they are sacrificing the ambitions of their children

to live in a better world than this

an old soldier is warning us

with autocratic governments in positions of power

the world stands at the darkest hour

since the days of Hitler and the reich

life he says cannot go on like this

something has to give.

we are standing on the brink of war

he urges us to take a step back

not for the Saltaire, stars and stripes, or union flag

but for humanity

he worries about the sanity of sociopathetic leaders

with no respect  for others

as they lust for power at all costs

and watch lands lie bleeding

as they play war games by remote control

Envious Eyes

On the morning after Catalonia declares her independence from Spain I declare my support for independent state of Catalonia and Catalan people in taking this step and as I do so part of me is wishing it was Scotland. It is for that reason I have written this poem and titled it Envious Eyes I hope you enjoy the read. Envious Eyes

As a new nation declares its right to exist

I look on with envious eyes

proud of Catalonia as it takes its first steps

yet this Glasgweigan wishes it was Scotland

and is certain it will be in our time

for the moment however I am proud of our comrades

as they move forward to a better day

having decided that their story could no longer be told in Spanish

it had to be authentically Catalonian

meanwhile Madrid attempts to bring in draconian laws

to stop the tide of history

losing any sense of dignity it may have had

as Franco’s heirs live on at least in their minds

and those who want to bring Dickensian times to Scotland

in the name of a United Kingdom

which is the one of the most unequal  socieies in the democratic world

where the poor go hungry so the rich can be fed

and disabled people are being  financially bled

and are told by some unelected lord

they aren’t even worth the minimum wage

as Catalonia takes centre stage

I recall how bravely they fought

feel ashamed of pro union Scots

so gullible they sing of saving a  monarch

who will out live many of them

and are too deluded to see

that short term gain comes with a long term loss

and I will shed no tears when it arrives at their door

they will have only themselves to blame

as they worship false gods dressed in ermine

whose true uniform is sackcloath and ashes

so as Catalonia prepares for the first day of a new future

I look with optimism of a Scotland free from class ridden snobbery

where poverty and inequality will be things of the past

and dreams and ambitions realised

so as I say Viva Catalonia I must admit

though I look at you proudly

I do so with envious eyes

Storm Of Sorrow

On the day of the Catalan Independence Referendum the Spainish state is tainted as Prime Minister Rajoy tries to deny reality and employs both sabotage and brute force to stop people exercising their democratic right to vote. These tactics are an insult to democracy and reminiscent of Franco’s fascist dictatorship As I watched the scenes unravel on my phone I was sickened to see pictures of people covered in blood and yet the UK government statement talked only of Spain and how valuable an ally they are to the UK without giving so much as a moment  to consider the victims of these unprovoked attacks. Having csmpaigned for Scotland’s independence in 2014 I remember the support we received from our Catalan comrades and outraged at their treatment I wrote this poem in support of both Catalonia and their right to exercise their democratic mandate. Ive given it the title Storm Of Sorrow I hope you enjoy the read

Storm Of Sorrow

Carnage in Catalan streets

citizens shot down by riot police.

as people go to exercise their right to vote

on seeing images of bloodsoaked protesters

British politicians gloat on social networks

unable to continue their glee

before removing their offensive tweets.

this will teach the SNP they claim

on the day democracy is less important than blame

and Franco’s heirs flaunt their hate

they should be ashamed to side with Spain

but they do

the red white and blue is bloodstained again

as democracy weeps it whispers the truth

with tears used as punctuation

you can judge a nation’s leaders

by the company they keep

and people who lecture others on internationalism

fall silent in the storm of sorrow

Eclipsed

As many of you will know this is National Poetry Day and this year the theme for the event is freedom. Like all the themes chosen to celebrate this day it can be interpreted in any number of ways but inspite of mywell documented support for both the Scottish National Party and the cause of independence , if you have come here looking for a braveheart claymore wielding poem in support of my party or cause your going to very disappointed.  I’ve written plenty of those poems in the past and will do so again when the occasion demands. This however, is neither the time nor the place for it. Instead i have chosen to look at the top in a more petsonal capacity by addressing those hard won freedoms that should be the hallmark of any civilised society and the danger to them from the Conservative goverment and The Great Repeal Bill which would give UK Prime Minister Theresa May the powers of a medievil monarch. This is the most dangerous piece of legislation brought before any parliament since the German parliament passed the Enabling Act in 1933 which paved the way for Hitler’s reign of terror. I’ve given it the title Eclipsed as i genuinely fear for our rights if this passes into law. I hope you enjoy the read

Eclipsed
Freedom

For this Glasgweigan

means being able to assemble

with my friends at a place of my choice

raise my voice in demonstrations

or poetry nights

fight for the rights of others

as well as myself

I’ve never been the selfish type

some kinds of freedoms are greatly overhyped

like that to offend others

in the name of free speech

freedom means having within my reach

the chance to make the most of my skills and abilities

walk the streets with dignity

unafraid to be who i am

whilst respecting others

even when we may disagree on certain issues

it is not a woolly concept

supported only by guardian reading

bleeding heart liberals

and must be availble to all citizens

not just those who can afford

to send their children to the right schools

it is imposing only rules considered reasonable and necessary

for society to function properly

but in all honesty

not everyone is as free

as should be the case in a civilised country

I recognise freedom can have an ugly side

if allowed to go unchecked

to me it’s all about respect

we can’t afford to neglect our hard won rights

or the sun will go down on them

and as we sleep through the darkest hour of night

we will wake up to find them eclipsed

The Ultimate Selfservative And Her Slowly Slipping Halo.

If you asked me who was without doubt the most arrogant, deluded , self serving politician in Scotland. My answer would not be our First Minister Nicola Sturgeon. Nor would it be her predecessor predecessor and the man unionists love to hate Alex Salmond.  Labour leader Kezia Dugdale is another who will be glad to know she failed to win this most unwanted title as did the Liberal Democrats Scottish leader Willie Rennie or the Tory Party’s Secretary for Scotland in a state and before you ask I did get that job description the right way round especially when you consider the occupant of it is one David Mundell. If you had given me the last answer however, you would be getting a lot  closer as to who I believe holds this title. You see I believe the most arrogant and deluded politician in Scotland is the leader of the Scottish Conservative group at Holyrood Ruth Davidson.

Yes I have surprised you haven’t I ? Well not if your a regular reader of this blog I haven’t.  I have never believed that  Ruth is anywhere near as talented as she likes to think , unless you measure talent by  the size of your ego rather than your intellect or how many sycophantic friends you have in the UK Press And Media.

Ever since the beginning of the indeprndence referendum campaign there has been a concerted effort by those sympathetic to the unionist view to remould and detoxify the previously toxic Tory brand in Scotland and slowly but surely we saw the Tories who many of us regardless of our position on the constitutional position thought were on the edge not only of mainstream political thought but also of normality brought back in to our political discourse and in Ruth Davidson the British establishment created the toy that no-one even thought possible the cuddly Tory and some people began to take that toy on trial.

During the referendum Davidson won a reputation as a feisty debater who wasn’t afraid to make she believed was a positive case for the UK and Scotland’s place in the union.  However, it was in the aftermath of the referendum that Opperation Ruth really got under way as she positioned herself as the self styled saviour of the union. The fact that Davidson was able to achieve this was due in no small part to the collapse of the Labour Party  due to their vote being more pro independence than the  leadership of the Scottish party ever believed possible. This in Ruth’s world meant that Labour and the Liberal Democrats would at some time have to be open to greater powers for the Scottish Parliament or even embrace independence from the UK. To her this was completely unacceptable and she was going to tell us this and make sure we got the message

Helped at every opportunity by her friends in the press Davidson was given a very easy ride and was left to attack the Scottish Government at every available chance. It was becoming more obvious by the day that  the cuddly conservative had now become the cuddly unionist and was allowed to campaign in every recent election be it Council, Scottish , and Westminster on only one issue namely her opposition to what she described as a second divisive independence referendum.

The fact that both the Labour Party and Liberal Democrats also ran on this campaign was absolutely shocking but proof if any were needed that it was Davidson who had framed the unionist debate in post referendum Scotland. As someone who got politically active as a twenty something during the Thatcher Years I have to admit it caused me very real and genuine concern that nobody seemed to mention the fact she was a Tory least of all Davidson herself . Indeed in the 2016 Scottish Parliamentary Elections one could have been forgiven for thinking that the Scottish Conservative And Unionist Party had been renamed the Ruth Davidson Party so absent were the words Conservative, or Tory from her campaign literature.

With her unexpected success in replacing The Labour Party as the main opposition party at Holyrood Davidson began to display the first signs of the arrogance which will eventually destroy her by claiming that she was now leader of the official opposition to the SNP government of Nicola Sturgeon despite the fact there is no such title for the opposition in Holyrood.

As if this wasn’t enough she then boasted despite her party being comprehensively destroyed in the constituency vote by the SNP that she was the slayer of nationalists when campaigning for the UK to remain in the European Union.   In any other country in the world this would have been hailed as a sign of politician losing their mind but in unionist Scotland, it was hailed as a sign of a stateswoman and it was no surprise that she won the Herald Politician Of The Year award a decision I thought was absolutely laughable.

Since then the press and media have continued talk up Ruth Davidson as the voice of mainstream political unionism in Scotland and her party’s recent electoral success in gaining 13 seats at the UK General Election will no doubt be used as further evidence of that  claim. This is all very well but there are I think a couple of fatal flaws in this argument. The first came at the end of March during the debate in the Scottish Parliament on whether or not to hold a second independence referendum when Ruth showed her temper by attempting to tell First Minister Nicola Sturgeon to  sit down. This was bullying pure and simple and it far from being a stateswoman Davidson was no more than a petulant  child in a job which demands more talents than she has in  her locker.

The second flaw was shown during the live TV election debates when the mask of the cuddly unionist began to slip as she was grilled on  the controversial rape clause legislation and again her temper began to show a very ugly side to her personality.

It was however in a one to one interview that the bold Ruth showed how deluded she was when she claimed that the SNP did not win last year’s Scottish Elections. This and her recent posting of a picture of a supermodel on the Twitter social networking  site  show a politician who is slowly but steadily embarking on a journey to political decline and her hubris will be the death of a political career which was built on a house of sand. The halo of the ultimate selfservative has slowly started to slip and it is only a matter of time before it completes its downward journey and  I look forward to the inevitable crash.

Till next time

When It Comes To Independence Some People Are Really Obsessed.

After seven weeks of campaigning it’s finally here election day 2017. Depending on who you are talking to this election has been about Brexit , A Fairer Britain , and Nicola Sturgeon’s Obsession With independence. It’s also been about the Environment, a Second European Union Referendum, and Nicola Sturgeon’s obsession with independence.

Other topics for discussion have included the Dementia Tax Jeremy Corbyn’s ‘dealings’ I prefer to call them peace negotiations,  with the IRA, and Nicola Sturgeon’s obsession with independence. Have you detected a theme yet ? I think I have and it’s this according to the unionist parties and their friends in the press Nicola Sturgeon has an obsession with independence.

Reality however paints a different picture. Far from Nicola Sturgeon having an obsession with independence it is in fact the unionists who are obsessed by the right of Scotland’s people to at any time determine our future god knows they’ve mentioned it often enough. In every campaign leaflet, in every party political broadcast, and in every televised news bulletin the burning question at least according to the interviewer wasn’t Theresa May’s refusal to take part in debates or Jeremy Corbyn’s suitability for the job of Prime Minister , it was yes you’ve guessed it Nicola Sturgeon’s obsession with independence

This to me is nothing of short of propaganda of the type Josef Goebbels would have proud to call his own. It was the same all through the recent council election campaign when unionists of all political hues pleaded for votes on the grounds it would send a message to Nicola Sturgeon that Scotland didn’t want what they referred to as another divisive independence referendum even though local councils have absolutely no power to stop such a referendum from ever taking place should the Scottish parliament decide to hold one. Still one mustn’t let the truth get in the way of the unionists plan to bring Scotland to heel.

This constant drip feeding to the most gullible and misinformed section of the public is bound to have had an impact on how they were persuaded to vote. Fortunately I am too well educated to fall for this toxic nonsense but many other people particularly in the older demographic are not so lucky and will tend to take these comments as if they were handed to them on tablets of stone. You see some people really are obsessed with independence and guess what, there not in the SNP

Till next time.
