Storm Of Sorrow

On the day of the Catalan Independence Referendum the Spainish state is tainted as Prime Minister Rajoy tries to deny reality and employs both sabotage and brute force to stop people exercising their democratic right to vote. These tactics are an insult to democracy and reminiscent of Franco’s fascist dictatorship As I watched the scenes unravel on my phone I was sickened to see pictures of people covered in blood and yet the UK government statement talked only of Spain and how valuable an ally they are to the UK without giving so much as a moment  to consider the victims of these unprovoked attacks. Having csmpaigned for Scotland’s independence in 2014 I remember the support we received from our Catalan comrades and outraged at their treatment I wrote this poem in support of both Catalonia and their right to exercise their democratic mandate. Ive given it the title Storm Of Sorrow I hope you enjoy the read

Storm Of Sorrow

Carnage in Catalan streets

citizens shot down by riot police.

as people go to exercise their right to vote

on seeing images of bloodsoaked protesters

British politicians gloat on social networks

unable to continue their glee

before removing their offensive tweets.

this will teach the SNP they claim

on the day democracy is less important than blame

and Franco’s heirs flaunt their hate

they should be ashamed to side with Spain

but they do

the red white and blue is bloodstained again

as democracy weeps it whispers the truth

with tears used as punctuation

you can judge a nation’s leaders

by the company they keep

and people who lecture others on internationalism

fall silent in the storm of sorrow

The Day The Phoenix Rises

This poem draws on the stories of my ancestors who told me about the importance of the phoenix in guarding the laws of Scotland and Ireland and the belief that our countries will finally be free of British rule on the day the phoenix rises. It is for that reason I have given it the title The Day The Phoenix Rises. I hope you enjoy the read.
The Day The Phoenix Rises

Outsiders

we were scorned on arrival

in a cold uncaring place

locals claimed we were not the same as them

using language and religion as excuses to label us

boasting of their achievements

as part of an empire

they were unaware their own culture was scorned

Scots or Irish a Celt can never be

reborn as a Brit

when they were told this

the new order got angry

they were beyond unhappy

when the Irish community formed a football club

which would be open to those of  all faiths and none

when trophies were won we were feared and hated

the angry brigade felt threatened

that their fragile identity had been questioned

there were suggestions we should go home

as those with blood on their hands

conveniently forgot  it was they

who did the clearing

which left us dispossessed

the victims of cultural genocide

in the Celtic heartlands from which I am descended

I’ve always known my blood is the blood of twin tribes

both of which were marginalised

the Irish  and the Islanders share

a history of oppression

with stolen lands taken from the people

and given to those who would obey colonial orders

without questioning why

in Culloden and Atherny

the pain lives on  in the lyrics of our songs

and the hearts of those who know

the history the oppressers tried to ban

along with our culture and traditions

that however was a big mistake to make

in their determination to break us

they inspired a spirit of resistance

they will not quell

hell will freeze over before we ever accept

the label outsiders

It is not who we are nor will it ever be

our freedom will come on the day the phoenix rises

to take us home from the ashes of a ruined estate

The Ultimate Selfservative And Her Slowly Slipping Halo.

If you asked me who was without doubt the most arrogant, deluded , self serving politician in Scotland. My answer would not be our First Minister Nicola Sturgeon. Nor would it be her predecessor predecessor and the man unionists love to hate Alex Salmond.  Labour leader Kezia Dugdale is another who will be glad to know she failed to win this most unwanted title as did the Liberal Democrats Scottish leader Willie Rennie or the Tory Party’s Secretary for Scotland in a state and before you ask I did get that job description the right way round especially when you consider the occupant of it is one David Mundell. If you had given me the last answer however, you would be getting a lot  closer as to who I believe holds this title. You see I believe the most arrogant and deluded politician in Scotland is the leader of the Scottish Conservative group at Holyrood Ruth Davidson.

Yes I have surprised you haven’t I ? Well not if your a regular reader of this blog I haven’t.  You I have never believed that  Ruth is anywhere near as talented as she likes to think , unless you measure talent by  the size of your ego rather than your intellect or how many sycophantic friends you have in the UK Press And Media.

Ever since the beginning of the indeprndence referendum campaign there has been a concerted effort by those sympathetic to the unionist view to remould and detoxify the previously toxic Tory brand in Scotland and slowly but surely we saw the Tories who many of us regardless of our position on the constitutional position thought were on the edge not only of mainstream political thought but also of normality brought back in to our political discourse and in Ruth Davidson the British establishment created the toy that no-one even thought possible the cuddly Tory and some people began to take that toy on trial.

During the referendum Davidson won a reputation as a feisty debater who wasn’t afraid to make she believed was a positive case for the UK and Scotland’s place in the union.  However, it was in the aftermath of the referendum that Opperation Ruth really got under way as she positioned herself as the self styled saviour of the union. The fact that Davidson was able to achieve this was due in no small part to the collapse of the Labour Party  due to their vote being more pro independence than the  leadership of the Scottish party ever believed possible. This in Ruth’s world that Labour and the Liberal Democrats would at some time have to be open to greater powers for the Scottish Parliament or even embrace independence from the UK and to her this was completely unacceptable and she was going to tell us this and make sure we got the message

Helped at every opportunity by her friends in the press Davidson was given a very easy ride and was left to attack the Scottish Government at every available chance. It was becoming more obvious by the day that  the cuddly conservative had now become the cuddly unionist and was allowed to campaign in every recent election be Council, Scottish , and Westminster on only one issue namely her opposition to what she described as a second divisive independence referendum.

The fact that both the Labour Party and Liberal Democrats also ran on this campaign was absolutely shocking but proof if any were needed that it was Davidson who had framed the unionist debate in post referendum Scotland. As someone who got politically active as a twenty something during the Thatcher Years I have to admit it caused me very real and genuine concern that nobody seemed to mention the fact she was a Tory least of all Davidson herself . Indeed in the 2016 Scottish Parliamentary Elections one could have been forgiven for thinking that the Scottish Conservative And Unionist Party had been renamed the Ruth Davidson Party so absent were the words Conservative, or Tory from her campaign literature.

With her unexpected success in replacing The Labour Party as the main opposition party at Holyrood Davidson began to display the first signs of the arrogance which will eventually destroy her by claiming that she was now leader of the official opposition to the SNP government of Nicola Sturgeon despite the fact there is no such title for the opposition in Holyrood.

As if this wasn’t enough she then boasted despite her party being comprehensively destroyed in the constituency vote by the SNP that she was the slayer of nationalists when campaigning for the UK to remain in the European Union.   In any other country in the world this would have been hailed as a sign of politician losing their mind but in unionist Scotland, it was hailed as a sign of a stateswoman and it was no surprise that she won the Herald Politician Of The Year award a decision I thought was absolutely laughable.

Since then the press and media have continued talk up Ruth Davidson as the voice of mainstream political unionism in Scotland and her party’s recent electoral success in gaining 13 seats at the UK General Election will no doubt be used as further evidence of that  claim. This is all very well but there are I think a couple of fatal flaws in this argument. The first came at the end of March during the debate in the Scottish Parliament on whether or not to hold a second independence referendum when Ruth showed her temper by attempting to tell First Minister Nicola Sturgeon to  sit down. This was bullying pure and simple and it far from being a stateswoman Davidson was no more than a petulant  child in a job which demands more talents than she has in  her locker.

The second flaw was shown during the live TV election debates when the mask of the cuddly unionist began to slip as she was grilled on  the controversial rape clause legislation and again her temper began to show a very ugly side to her personality.

It was however in a one to one interview that the bold Ruth showed how deluded she was when she claimed that the SNP did not win last year’s Scottish Elections. This and her recent posting of a picture of a supermodel on the Twitter social networking  site  show a politician who is slowly but steadily embarking on a journey to political decline and her hubris will be the death of a political career which was built on a house of sand. The halo of the ultimate selfservative has slowly started to slip and it  is only a matter of time before it completes it’s downward journey and  I look forward to the inevitable crash.

People’s Friend

As Jeremy Corbyn addresses the masses at Glastonbury I give my thoughts on a middle class man addressing a middle class crowd and pretending to be a friend of the people. I don’t know why but this working class hero stuff is something I just don’t buy. You see if you are a unionist of any kind you are essentially a conservative maybe not in the economic sense but you certainly are in the social and cultural senses of the word. I’ve given the poem the title People’s Friend I hope you enjoy the read.

People’s Friend

A middle class man

quotes a middle class poet

to the middle class gathering

at a festival in middle England

with ticket prices which only the rich can afford

meanwhile champagne socialists

ignore Scotland

till they need our votes to gain power

at a Westminster election

if we dare to challenge them

they call us insurgents

leading an insurrection

as the self righteous  luvvie brigade

play pretend politics

with a crowd to apathetic to care

about humanity

and grandpa Jeremy desperately tries to re-live his youth

as proof he can hang with the cool kids

except the kids he’s hanging out with

aren’t quite as cool as they would have you believe

and this imposter did a cut and paste job

on large parts of the SNP domestic policy

and had the brass neck to claim it

as radical

as his vision for the many not the few

even a so-called red couldn’t ditch the slogan

which had tints of a Tory Blue Tony

and just like that phoney his mask is beginning to slip

You see voters like me won’t take lip.

from a Brexiteer who will always put himself first

as he cynically attempts to manipulate the less aware

he has garden paths to lead them up

and garden parties to attend

this man whose style at Prime Minister’s Questions

was enough to give me  indigestion

raising points which we were meant to believe

 were sent by ordinary people

rather than focus groups of party members

the honourable member for  Islington

is and has always been a servant of the Westminster agenda

and had only  one mission for Britain

namely to win the colony back for the crown

unlike some I never bought his story

the people’s friend , I see him as  just another red Tory

though maybe not in the economic sense

I’ll cut him a bit of slack

but anyone who believes in the union flag

is and always will be

a conservative at heart

it doesn’t matter how nice they are

or how trendy or cool they pretend to be

if they don’t want be to free from the last chains of empire

they subconsciously out themselves as hypocrits and liars

every time the word socialism passes their lips

the little Brits lack the awareness to realise

you can’t have socialism in a kingdom

united or otherwise

it depends on the class system to survive

as a middle class man

who quotes a middle class poet

to a middle class crowd

knows only too well

as he pretends to be the people’s friend

and remains no friend of Scotland.

When It Comes To Independence Some People Are Really Obsessed.

After seven weeks of campaigning it’s finally here election day 2017. Depending on who you are talking to this election has been about Brexit , A Fairer Britain , and Nicola Sturgeon’s Obsession With independence. It’s also been about the Environment, a Second European Union Referendum, and Nicola Sturgeon’s obsession with independence.

Other topics for discussion have included the Dementia Tax Jeremy Corbyn’s ‘dealings’ I prefer to call them peace negotiations,  with the IRA, and Nicola Sturgeon’s obsession with independence. Have you detected a theme yet ? I think I have and it’s this according to the unionist parties and their friends in the press Nicola Sturgeon has an obsession with independence.

Reality however paints a slightly different picture. Far from Nicola Sturgeon having an obsession with independence it is in fact the unionists who are obsessed by the right of the Scotland to at any time determine our future god knows they’ve mentioned it often enough In every campaign leaflet in every party political broadcast and in every televised news bulletin the burning question at least according to the interviewer wasn’t Theresa May’s refusal to take part in debates or Jeremy Corbyn’s suitability for the job of Prime Minister , it was yes you’ve guessed it Nicola Sturgeon’s obsession with independence

This to me is nothing of short of propaganda of the type that Josef Goebbels would have proud to call his own. It was the same all through the recent council election campaign when unionists of all political hues pleaded for votes on the grounds it send a message to Nicola Sturgeon that Scotland didn’t want what they referred to as another divisive independence referendum even local councils have absolutely no power to stop such a referendum from ever taking place should the Scottish parliament decide to hold one. Still one mustn’t let the truth get in the way of the unionists plan to bring Scotland to heel.

This constant drip feeding to the most gullible and misinformed section of the public is bound to have had an impact on how they were persuaded to vote. Fortunately I am too well educated to fall for this toxic nonsense but many other people particularly in the older demographic are not so lucky and will tend to take these comments as if they were handed to them on tablets of stone. You see some people really are obsessed with independence and guess what there not in the SNP

Till next time.

Comfort Zone

On day 21 of NaPoWriMo My poem  takes a look at the topic of Privacy. I do so with the issue of locality very much on my mind and that’s why I set it in the most personal places of all, well you can’t get more personal than your street and your home. It is for this  reason I’ve run with the title suggested by my Facebook friend Karen Campbell and titled it Comfort Zone I hope you enjoy the read.
Comfort Zone
It’s nice here

I have nice friends

a nice home

and a very nice life

and believe me that is exactly how

I want it to stay

nothing will take me from my comfort zone

you see I give money

to those less fortunate than myself

I look after my health

take care of myself

I know it sounds so middle class

but I’m not I’m just cautious

I’ve always been honest

maybe it’s because I’m single

I may mix and mingle

as much as anyone

and believe me this girl

has known how to have fun

since before Cyndi Lauper hit the charts

with the song that became an anthem

but as a Cosmo girl I learned early

to value my independence

so when I shut the door behind me

at the end of the night

I like to keep myself right

lock the door on the world

and retreat to the space I call mine

my home  is my comfort zone

the place I can truly be me

and have the privacy to freely

express myself

Scroungers (A Tabloid  Tory Has An Ephiney)

On day 19 of NaPoWriMo My poem takes a satirical look at  press and media stereotypes. These stereotypes  are all too often used by the establishment to label and demonise those groups society consideres different like Immigrants and Disabled People and have a really negative impact if we don’t counter act them .I have given my poem the title Scroungers, I hope you enjoy the read.

Scroungers

I hate scroungers

I really do

coming over here to live off

our resources

taking things from the likes of me and you

they get all the best housing

it’s true I read it in the Daily Mail

and that’s a paper I trust

I’m glad we’re leaving Europe

and putting Britain first

it will stop all those Poles

taking our jobs

we need to make Britain great

believe in the United Kingdom

well Britain’s got talent

and the X-factor is the envy of the world

it really it is

I think Simon Cowell should be Prime Minister

he’d soon put a stop to all these immigrants

flooding our country

with all those languages and traditions

can they not understand this is Britain

we don’t want this kind of nonsense

and as for Scotland I don’t want independence

I don’t support separation

I get all the political education I need

from the Daily Express

that’s why I hate Nicola Sturgeon

I mean anyone who wears  a red dress that often

has to be a communist

and I hate communists I really do

I’m all for the union

three cheers for the red white and blue

I know I’m poor and all the royals and lords are stinking rich

so what life’s a bitch

but these people need the extra money

what do you mean I’m a Tory

I’ve voted Labour all of my days

but I think Theresa May is better to lead the  country

she knows how to put people in their place

she’s told them in Europe

we’re leaving and that’s the way it is

we’re going through the trap door

and we’re going to get rid of all the European laws

We’ll ban the Easter Bunny and Santa Claus

but poverty will be still be allowed

and disabled people will have their benefits cut

for being scroungers

there  a drain on our resources

and a burden on the state

what have they ever done to make Britain great ?

nothing,

it’s not shocking
who the hell is Stephen Hawking ?

was he in the paralympic team

god save our gracious Queen

what do you mean she costs too much ?

that’s not true or I would have read in the Sun

or saw it on the BBC News

I know everything I need to know

and that’s not a lot

I’m British not a Scot

and I might vote Tory

I believe in a land of hope and glory

even if it kills me and it might

I know I’m right to hate scroungers

what’s that it’s a pity I don’t know who the real scroungers are

seriously, the bankers are worse than the immigrants ?

The United Kingdom is run by and for the privileged

and they don’t give a damn about me

well …

maybe being British isn’t so great after all
